Different Types of Leather - Handbag Edition

Handbag shopping can be HARD. So many different types of leather, different styles, different brands - the list goes on. How do you know what’s good quality? How do you know if it’s real leather?

From a former sales associate in the handbag department of Nordstrom, here are a few tips on identifying different types of leather when you’re shopping for handbags.

Pebble Leather

Pebble leather is a textured leather. It has a raised surface and a texture that looks like little pebbles (hence the name). It’s a great casual leather and good for everyday use.

Saffiano Leather

Saffiano leather has become a really popular leather for handbags. The leather is sealed in a wax coating, and then imprinted with a cross hatch pattern. During my time as a sales person at Nordstrom, a lot of people made comments assuming saffiano leather handbags weren’t real leather. But it actually is! It feels hard and is very durable. This kind of leather is really easy to clean and sturdy.

Smooth Leather

Smooth leather is the most supple leather, and sometimes referred to as “butter leather” because it’s so soft. In  my opinion, out of all the different types of leather, smooth leather feels the most luxurious. It looks the most expensive, too. However, because it is so supple, it can scratch easily, so you will want to treat it with a lot of care!

Patent Leather

Patent leather is coated with a lacquer that gives a high gloss finish. Flashy and shiny, it’s definitely eye catching! It’s great for a chic, high fashion look. Patent leather is pretty easy to clean and low maintenance.

Bonus Tip

If you’re considering buying any leather bag, make sure to read the product description. Faux leather can be pebbled, smooth, patent, or saffiano. So if you’re looking for the real thing, check the label! Oh, and if you find a cute bag at Target, it is never real leather.

Until next time - may your weekend be full of creativity and style.
