7 Must See Spots for Architecture Lovers: SoCal Edition
I’m a huge fan of grabbing a coffee and strolling around, chatting, and taking in the sights. Particularly, I love architecture. That’s one of the biggest perks of living in Chicago (not to mention they have an amazing Open House every year). Not only do I admire skyscrapers and art deco, I also enjoy Spanish architecture. California is no stranger to Spanish influences (as it literally used to be Mexico), and there are some stunning buildings there. Here are 7 must see spots for architecture lovers: SoCal edition.
Jeff Shelton Buildings - Santa Barbara
My main motivation for visiting Santa Barbara was to do a self-guided walking tour of Jeff Shelton buildings. His work is inspired by Spanish architect, Gaudi, as well as modern California style and a lot of funk. We really enjoyed his unique style, charm, and bold choices. I highly recommend visiting his work if you visit Santa Barbara!
Getty Villa - Malibu
The Getty Villa property is a recreation of an ancient Roman summer home. The architecture is lovely, with balconies overlooking the ocean, a long, thin pool in the courtyard, and several water features throughout. Not only is the architecture beautiful and warm, it’s also a museum with ancient artifacts on every floor. It’s quite fascinating!
The Mission Inn Hotel & Spa - Riverside
If you’re an architecture lover, The Mission Inn Hotel & Spa is a must for your list. The mission is over 100 years old, and is an incredible Spanish-style structure. Not only do they offer accommodation, but you can have dinner in their courtyard strung with lights. It’s an incredibly romantic experience.
Orange County Museum of Art - Costa Mesa
The Orange County Museum of Art is a structure of art itself. The facade is beautifully curved, and the inside has some beautiful floating staircases. It’s more of a contemporary deconstructivist style, which is pretty captivating. It’s free to visit and is small enough to work your way through in one short visit (perfect for family or group outings).
Santa Barbara Courthouse - Santa Barbara
The Santa Barbara Courthouse is another beautiful Spanish-style building in Southern California. The outside is lined with palm trees, cherry blossoms, and a gorgeous backyard. Inside there are winding staircases, beautiful tiles, bold artwork, and a gorgeous rooftop with a 360 degree view of the town. The legal system never looked so beautiful.
Balboa Park - San Diego
Another Spanish-style architecture staple in Southern California is Balboa Park in San Diego. This park is free to enter, and showcases multiple stunning buildings, an amphitheater with a gorgeous walking path, and several breathtaking gardens and water features. If your thing is walking around with a coffee in hand, this is the place to roam!
The Mission at San Juan Capistrano
Last but certainly not least is The Mission at San Juan Capistrano. Missions typically have a sordid history (which you can learn about), however the beauty of the architecture is hard to miss. You can walk the grounds, learn about the missions in California, and admire the amazingly striking, ruin-like architecture. It truly feels like a step back in time.
Make to sure add these must-see spots to your bucket list if you’re an architecture lover.
Until next time - may your weekend be full of creativity and style.
