Harold Washington Library’s Secret Top Floor
If you’re a Chicagoan, you’ve heard of Harold Washington Library. And you may have heard of their secret top floor. However, there are many Chicagoans - and tourists - who have no idea that there’s a hidden, winter escape within those stony walls.
On the 9th floor sits the Winter Garden - a spacious room with a domed glass ceiling, soft teal paint, and marbled floors. Chairs and tables quietly await visitors, and it doesn’t take long for them to arrive and get comfortable. This is a perfect spot to study, read a book, or just chill for a bit. It’s also gorgeous, and photography is allowed. Just make sure to remember that it is first and foremost a library so be mindful of your noise level. And if you’re wearing heeled shoes, they will echo, and everyone will stare at you. Not that I would know…
Not only is this place crazy photogenic, it’s also a great place for couple pictures! Natural light pours in from the tall windows and glass ceiling dome. There are different corners and a windowed hallway to explore for different backgrounds. It’s quite breathtaking.
Harold Washington Library is accessible by CTA. You can take the brown line and get off at Harold Washington Library - yes, it really is that easy. Street parking is also available, but expect to walk a few blocks on the weekends. The library is open every day of the week, closing early on Friday and Saturday, and limited hours on Sunday.
I hope you get to explore and see the amazing top floor at the Harold Washington Library! Make sure to add it to your Chicago bucket list.
Until next time - may your weekend be full of creativity and style.
